Our engines are manufactured by a family of licensees, primarily based in Asia, and serve a multitude of marine applications and segments. Two-stroke engines are the reliable and preferred choice as prime mover for ocean-going merchant vessels.
Our state-of-the-art engine designs are optimised for IMO Tier II compliance, while our electronically controlled ME versions offer such benefits as optimised fuel and lube-oil consumption, and improved low-load operation, and build on the many decades of success enjoyed by their mechanically controlled predecessors.
We recently opened a new chapter in the diesel story with the introduction of the ME-GI gas injection engine. The ME-GI represents a highly efficient, flexible, propulsion-plant solution that offers shipowners and operators the option of using either fuel oil or gas, depending on relative price and availability.
Similarly, our new ME-LGI liquid gas injection engine is designed to handle low-flash-point, low-sulphur fuels like LPG and methanol. Consequently, its green credentials are striking with emissions of sulphur being almost completely eliminated. MAN developed the ME-LGI engine in response to interest from the shipping world in operating on alternatives to heavy fuel oil.

Since the implementation of IMO Tier I, the first stage of IMO MARPOL 73/78 Annex VI emissions regulations for marine engines by the International Maritime Organisation, MAN Diesel & Turbo has progressively introduced NOx-optimised engines.
The next target for MAN Diesel & Turbo was IMO Tier II, the second stage of IMO MARPOL 73/78 Annex VI. The new limitations came into force in 2011 and specified a 20% reduction in NOx compared to Tier I. Today's engines are designed for IMO Tier II. The next step is Tier III with a NOx reduction of 80% compared to Tier I. To be able to comply with Tier III, MAN Diesel & Turbo offers two solutions for its two-stroke engines: one is SCR (selective catalytic reduction), the other is EGR (exhaust gas recirculation).
IMO Tier III is scheduled to come into force in January 2016. Vessels with a keel-laid date on or after January 1, 2016 that travel in NOx Emission Control Areas (ECA) will require IMO Tier III-certified engines. When these vessels travel outside of NOx ECAs, IMO Tier II will apply. Emission Control Areas are sea areas that have been granted special status based upon their proven need to reduce emissions from ships. ECAs can be designated based on two types of emissions: nitrogen oxides (NOx) or sulfur oxides (SOx). Currently, North America (the United States and Canada) is the only NOx Emissions Control Area, although several areas are expected to request consideration in the coming years.
